To solve this serious problem, Google has introduced a new Power Saving Mode in its navigation service. It is claimed that this feature can extend a smartphone's battery life by up to four hours.

While this feature looks attractive, the conditions and limitations that come with it are equally challenging. Today, we are discussing this new feature of Google Maps in detail, how it works, and its impact on users.

Why does Google Maps consume so much battery?

There are several technical reasons behind Google Maps' high battery consumption:

Continuous GPS Tracking: The primary reason is constant GPS tracking. To determine your geographic location every second, the phone must continuously communicate with satellites, which never lets the processor rest.

Real-time Data Streaming: Maps doesn't just show the path; it downloads real-time traffic speeds, accident information, and traffic congestion data based on statistics from millions of other drivers. Using machine learning, it constantly calculates your **Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA)** and alternative routes.

Bright Screen: To see the path clearly in daylight, the phone screen often needs to be at full brightness. Full-color maps, 3D buildings, and constantly changing visuals put heavy pressure on both the processor and the display.

The New Power Saving Mode

Google's recently launched mode is specifically targeted at users on long journeys without charging options. This feature minimizes unnecessary and high-energy-consuming visuals without removing the basic information required for navigation.

Technically, this mode utilizes Always-on Display (AoD) technology. When you turn this mode on and press the power button while navigation is active, the screen—instead of turning off completely—transforms into a monochrome (black and white) interface. This saves significant battery, especially on phones with OLED displays, because pixels do not need to light up to show the color black.

Limited to the Pixel 10 Series

A disappointing catch for now is that this feature is not available to all Android users. Google has currently limited this facility to its newest models: Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. These phones use Google's new Tensor G5 chipset, which can manage such complex tasks with lower energy consumption.

Although the rollout began last year, it has not yet reached older Pixel models or other brands like Samsung and Xiaomi. However, Google is expected to expand its availability gradually.

How to Activate This Mode?

If you have a Pixel 10 series phone, you can enable this feature within the Google Maps settings:

1. Open the Google Maps app.

2. Tap your profile picture in the top right corner.

3. Select Settings and go to Navigation settings.

4. Under Driving option, you will see a toggle for Power Saving Mode; turn it on.

Once enabled, you simply need to press the power button after starting your journey. The core navigation info will then appear directly on your lock screen.

Impact of Using Power Saving Mode

While it saves battery, this mode may not be useful for everyone at all times. Google has removed several important features to conserve energy:

No Color Coding: Usually, Maps shows red for traffic jams, yellow for moderate traffic, and green for clear roads. This color-coded info is unavailable in Power Saving Mode.

Reduced Detail: Visual alerts for accidents, construction, or sudden jams are removed. 3D buildings and detailed street names are also hidden, leaving only a simple black-and-white line and turn indicators.

No Nearby Search: Details like petrol pumps, restaurants, or coffee shops are not visible. You must return to the normal map to find these.

Orientation & Transit Limits: The mode only works in Portrait (vertical) mode, which is inconvenient for those using landscape dashboard mounts. Furthermore, it currently only works for driving, not for walking, cycling, or public transport.

When is it actually useful?

Google seems to have designed this as an emergency tool rather than a default setting. Imagine being on a long road trip where your car charger suddenly breaks. With only 10% battery left and a long way to go, this mode can keep your phone alive for an extra 4 hours, ensuring you reach your destination without getting lost.

Therefore, using this mode for short daily commutes or when charging is available doesn't make much sense, as it hides real-time road conditions that are often vital for safety.
