News of data theft or hacking has become common lately. Every day we
hear news of new hacking and data breaches. According to a recent report released by the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC), such data theft has increased by 69 percent in 2021 compared to 2020. According to a report released by the organization, there are three main reasons for data theft; Phishing / Smishing / BEC, ransomware and malware. Therefore, the report states that the main cause of data theft in 2021 was cyber attack. More thefts in 2021 were cyber-attack-related than the data thefts in 2020. Phishing messages or commercial e-mail agreements (phishing messages sent under the guise of being a colleague or supervisor) were the most widely used means of data theft in 2021. After that, Ransomware and Malware were the main causes of data theft in 2021.
As of now, the main cause of data theft in 2022 is projected to be ransomware rather than phishing. According to the ITRC, 294 million people were victims of data theft in 2021.
