HOW MANY GB OF RAM DO YOU NEED ON YOUR SMARTPHONE?

In terms of hardware development, Android smartphones have come a long way in a short
time. Let's look back at the time almost a decade ago, when smartphones were available with 512 MB RAM and single-core or dual-core.
RAM
Well known brand Apple did not consider more than 1 GB of RAM required for smartphones. At the same time, it was ignoring the advancement of RAM. Meanwhile, Android device makers, such as Samsung, have begun to demonstrate high performance. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3, which was unveiled in September 2013, was launched with 3 GB of RAM. At that time, Midrange smartphones were available in 512 MB to 1 GB RAM. Meanwhile, up to 2 GB of RAM was available on the flagship device.

The 'Note 3' has proved to be a major cornerstone for the RAM capability in Android smartphones. But then at CES 2015, Asus took a new leap with its Zenfone 2 with 4 GB of RAM. After that, 'One Plus Six' with 6 GB of RAM can be considered as a special push in the world of RAM. Because high-end RAM has gained popularity in smartphones since then.

Another important step in the Ram was 8 GB and 12 GB. Lately, brands seem to have broken the 16 GB RAM limit. To make this process even more interesting, various smartphone brands have even introduced virtual RAM. The strategy of virtual RAM is put forward with the principle that maximum RAM is effective. However, the question of how much RAM is required in an Android smartphone is still alive among the users.

Today, smartphones with middle range price have 4GB to 6GB of RAM available. While the premium (expensive) smartphones are easily going public with 8 GB and 12 GB RAM capacity. Meanwhile, 16 GB RAM and 18 GB RAM are popular for gaming. Now let's talk about the appropriate amount of RAM you need in 2022.

Finding a large size of RAM has become a trend right now. At a glance, the smartphone with a lot of GB of RAM is everyone's choice. It is also a good idea to look for more time on your smartphone. In any case, you need two years or more of time to enjoy an Android smartphone.

RAM is the memory used by application processors, their data, and the operating system. Today, 4 GB of RAM is considered the minimum for a midrange smartphone. However, some low priced Android smartphones are available with 2 GB RAM.

No matter how much RAM your smartphone has, it is limited. And it needs constant management. When you start a new app on Android, it occupies a portion of the memory. Normal apps and games use a few hundred MB.

Since last year, smartphone brands have been following the trend of 'virtual space'. It virtually expands the amount of RAM. This is an old concept, which has been in the computer for years. This is considered good for smartphones even though it is an old 'swap' memory. In which, the oldest and least used pages of memory are written in swap storage, and the memory they occupy in RAM is emptied. Once swap-out memory is required, protected memory pages are returned from storage and copied to RAM. This increases the amount of RAM available for app and data storage. However, the limitation is that it is much slower than RAM. But again, here comes one of the advantages of smartphones - they have modules that can store faster than most computers. It's not as fast as physical RAM, but it's faster than computers.

How many GB of RAM smartphone is suitable for you?
If you look at the history of smartphones, there used to be 128 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB and 2 GB of RAM. If you remember those days, then the applications that came at that time used to be very less in size. As time changed, so did technology. Ram's capacity increased. Apps are being upgraded. There used to be light apps, now heavy apps are coming to the same place. If you look at the size of today's apps, they are 50 MB, 100 MB, 500 MB. If you look at the games, they come in 1 GB, 1.5 GB and 2 GB sizes. While these apps used to be in some KB or MB size in the early days. Thus, everything is changing with time.

So nowadays if you use a smartphone, you need to have at least 4 GB of RAM. 4 GB RAM is becoming a standard in the smartphone industry. That's why smartphone makers are pushing for smartphones with at least 4 GB of RAM. So that the apps can be opened easily, users can easily use multi-tasking feature i.e. using two or more apps on the phone simultaneously. If user want to use for gaming, then also they can play it normally.

The smartphone maker is focusing on making the general user experience good. If you have noticed, the smartphone makers are bringing the same smartphone to the market with different RAM variants. So that users can choose the right option based on their needs and demands.

If you look at entry level, such phones have 2 GB or 3 GB RAM. This size of RAM is considered suitable for users who are shifting from feature or barphone to smartphone. For example, for your father, mother or grandparents these smartphones are considered as suitable. These phones are enough for social media, WhatsApp, YouTube, etc. But here we suggest you not to use a smartphone with 2 GB of RAM as much as possible. Because such phones can hang and bother you. If you are buying an entry level smartphone, buy a smartphone with at least 3 GB of RAM.

Forget 2 GB of RAM. If you want to use apps like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram as well as general type of gaming apps on your smartphone, buy a smartphone with at least 4 GB of RAM. But if you want to play heavy games, or if you are very fond of gaming and play games of one GB or more size, then the phone needs to have at least six GB of RAM. If you are even more interested in hardcore gaming then gaming smartphone is your choice. In that case try to buy a smartphone with 8 GB RAM.

But RAM alone is not an important and sufficient part of any smartphone. This means that just having a large size of RAM does not guarantee that you will experience fast performance on a smartphone. So in addition to your phone's RAM, your phone must also have a powerful processor and optimization. The combination of all these gives you the opportunity to experience good performance on the phone.

Let's look at the iPhone here as an example. The iPhone uses 3 or 4 GB of RAM. But such iPhones have the ability to compete with Android phones with 10 or 12 GB of RAM in terms of performance.
